(In)equality for all
Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
For this article we have chosen to talk about the very first human right: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” The focus of this piece will be on the wronging of this specific right, or in other words the inequality between men and women.
Why we have chosen this social wrong
It took us quite a long time to come up with a suitable topic for this article. We looked through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but could not really decide on what we wanted to talk about. Eventually we took a step back and thought about what social wrong is the most present in not only our own environment, but all over the world. That is how we decided on the inequality between men and women. We all are interested in this matter and how it influences daily lives of maybe not our own, but enough ones around us. Another reason this topic makes for a good article is because of how up-to-date it is; the media is full of it. Movements such as #MeToo and organisations like HeForShe are a good example of this.
The first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “all human beings are born free and equal.” Unfortunately this basic human right is not always lived by. For example, people of colour are often not treated equally. Woman too are frequently, and often unconsciously, treated differently as men. This article is going to be focused on the inequality between men and women. Especially the economical and social aspects of this topic. Hopefully this article will motivate people to take action against this violation of basic human rights.
Economic aspect
Almost everyone is aware that women are treated differently in the economy. Maybe you do not experience it yourself but you hear stories about it. This often happens in the workplace. Women are on average paid 80 percent less than men for doing the same job. They also often have less chance of getting a higher function. Some jobs are even stereotypically ‘for women’, such as being a nurse or a secretary. Sometimes they are even expected to do household chores, like make coffee or clean, when that is nowhere near their actual job. Employers often prefer to have male employees because women have a chance of getting pregnant which causes them to take a maternity leave. When a woman applies for a job the employer is not allowed to ask if she is pregnant and he can not deny her the job because she is. Unfortunately this happens anyways.
Social aspect
There are a lot of economic inequalities, but the problems lie mainly at the social aspect. Social inequality occurs when resources in a given society are distributed unevenly, typically through norms of allocation, that engender specific patterns along lines of socially defined categories of persons. There are a lot of different kinds of social inequalities, they all have to do with the big differences between man and women in this society. Firstly, on the work floor there can be a lot of problems for women. They are not allowed to wear certain pieces of clothing and it is forbidden to show certain body parts. A lot of women feel body shamed because of this. This is a big problem in schools, girls feel like they are not allowed to express themselves and this causes depression.
Secondly, a lot of women feel like they are not safe on the streets alone at night. It is extremely common that women get raped or attacked in these situations. This is a big problem because there cannot be proved if it is safe or not to walk home alone at night. In a lot of different situations a lot of different things can happen, this makes it so hard to think of a solution. Thirdly, a ‘no’ is not always accepted as a ‘no’. When women try to tell someone that they don’t want to do a certain thing, a lot of times this is not accepted. This can get women into a difficult situation.
Lastly, the biggest problem: the fact that all of these things still seem normal to so many people. These problems are real problems and the people should all know that these things are not acceptable. There are actions like #MeToo, #WhyWeWearBlack, Time’s up & HeForShe. HeForShe is a solidarity campaign which raises awareness for negative inequalities faced by women and girls. The movement gives speeches, lectures and tries to raise awareness for the issue. Celebrities like Emma Watson help to gain attention for the campaign. A lot of celebrities also took part in the #WhyWeWearBlack campaign. This meant that all the people who we were against inequality wore black clothing to the Golden Globe Awards in the U.S.A. This campaign too, was to raise awareness for the issue. Campaigns like Time’s Up and #MeToo do the same thing.
But there is still one thing to get straight. This inequality issue is not only for women to face, man have to too. Something that is not as widely known as the women inequality, is that a lot of men sometimes have as well. They have too much pressure to be masculine and have to try to live up to the ideal man. Man feel like they cannot show their emotions in public, they cannot cry when they sometimes feel like crying. This is not a well known issue because a lot of man do not talk about their feelings, which is another example of the pressure they feel. We should also pay attention to this issue and try to handle it just as the women inequality. Because in the end we are all human beings.
Creative way to draw attention
What better way is there to show people serious matters than using visuals? That is why we choose to make a simple, yet very clear cartoon about the (in)equality between men and women. The scale is a perfect example of balance and likewise of the equality there should be between both sexes.
With this cartoon we hope to make people think about the inequality in this world and their own environment and hopefully step up to it. (The cartoon is at the bottom of the page.)
Inequality is an issue everyone struggles with. Women feel unsafe, men feel pressured. This means that our society must change. We should all together show that we do not accept this through campaigns like #MeToo and #WhyWeWearBlack.
